BGE Presents $15,000 in Support of ‘i3STEM: image, invent, inspire’ Program

BALTIMORE (Nov. 6, 2013) – In support of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and to encourage and support youth in their quest of education and career opportunities based in STEM, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) recently presented $15,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County “i3STEM: image, invent, inspire” program. The presentation took place at the Boys and Girls Club of Harford County in Aberdeen, Maryland and many of the students of the program were in attendance.

“BGE has a long-standing commitment to supporting educational initiatives in the communities we serve through corporate giving, various employee-student volunteer opportunities and energy safety programs we put on for students throughout central Maryland,” said Calvin G. Butler, Jr., senior vice president of regulatory and external affairs for BGE. “We are pleased to support the
Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County in all the great work they do to keep our youth in school and engaged in STEM education. The “i3STEM: image, invent, inspire‟ program is a great stepping stone for the future educational and career opportunities of these students and we look forwarding to seeing them succeed in their goals.”

“i3STEM: image, invent, inspire” program is a generation-changing program, increasing members’ motivation to learn, improving their grades and providing them with a better opportunity to graduate from high school and attend post-secondary institutions on a STEM related path. A long term goal is to track students through the STEM pipeline in an effort to ensure that at least 6 percent of the students who begin the STEM program enter college committed to a STEM major. STEM disciplines represent some of the most arduous coursework in the academic curriculum. In order to help students through the STEM education pipeline, Boys and Girls Club of Harford County aims to provide a multiplicity of supports–motivation, classes and team experiences, mentoring, tutoring, and even educating the family of what is needed at each stage to succeed and make it through to college.

“The Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County are very grateful for the support from BGE,” said Tim Wills, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County. “The Clubs are committed to serving and meeting the needs of young people of HarfordCounty, especially in STEM education. Corporate support from companies, like BGE, ensures that every child has the ability to learn, grow and realize their own great futures.”

Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, BGE has played an integral role in working with Maryland communities to address economic development, public safety, civic issues and other initiatives that help enhance our neighborhoods. Through the use of shareholder dollars, BGE supports programs that deliver measurable and sustainable impact in areas of education, economic development, environment and arts and culture.

BGE’s corporate citizenship aligns with that of its parent company, Exelon Corporation. As part of Exelon’s merger in March 2012, Exelon and its subsidiaries have committed to maintain charitable giving of an average of $7 million per year in Maryland, including BGE’s service area, for the next 10 years.
